The Love Below...

Hey... So I took a second chance at the performing thing. I feel like I did pretty well. The name of the poem is "Black Women." Outfit details coming soon...

Sorry, about the quality of the video. It makes my words sound a little bit harsh. But other wise... Enjoy.

Instead of taking my own pictures of my outfit, I found a few lovely ones that other people took. Yes, I am lazy. Don't judge me. (=

Introducing...

If you guys have been keeping up with me, you'll know that I went to Minnesota this past Christmas break. While on my trip, I actually got up in front of people and performed a poem. For the first time since like middle school. It's not that I'm afraid of talking in public, that's easy. But when I have to perform a poem that I wrote, it's like I'm sharing a piece of me with the audience. I really do take my emotions and thoughts and transform them into words that are intricately woven together to inflict a certain reaction to my listeners. I want you to hear the passion, pain, and thought that went into every word selection.

If you've never read any of my poems, just go to the top of the page and click on the tab titled "My mind jumble." Many of them are posted on there. Sorry if there are spelling or grammatical errors. I just forget to go back and correct them.

Below is the video of my first performance. I had no idea my friend was recording. I was kind of sad that I didn't get my first time perform on camera, but I was pleasantly surprised earlier this week. The name of the poem was "It's my time."  How did I do for my first time?

Side note: You can skip to 3:30 if you don't want to listen to the kid before me.

Thrifting 101...

Some people cringe at the idea of wearing previously owned cloths (get off your high stool). However, I love it. You find the most amazing things in second hand shops that you would never find at Forever 21 or Macy's. Especially not at that price. You never know what you might find. But sometimes thrifting can be a pain. You spend hours looking through racks, and you wont find a single thing. Well, at least you had a great time looking through stuff from the 50's. lol.

Here are a few tips to help make your trip a little easier.
  1. Start early! That way all the old people don't come in and steal all the good stuff. Ask at the counter what day they receive new shipment, and come the following day. That way you can get first dibs on the goods.
  2. Leave your friends at home!!! I cannot stress this enough. You might think that you need a friend to tell you what looks good and what doesn't. Trust me, you don't. You should have more trust in your abilities. You'll understand what I'm saying when she keeps finding all the cute stuff, and you're stuck with they ugly grandma sweaters.
  3. Allot an adequate amount of time for you to do a through search of the store. You never know where you might find a gem. You might want to stop at Starbucks before hand so you can have enough energy to truly hunt, as I like to call it.
  4. Budget yourself! It's easy to go in there and get carried away. Those grandma loafers are not worth cutting into your rent money.
  5. Don't limit yourself to just one section. Explore everything. The men's section makes a perfect place to find over sized flannel shirts, just in time for winter. And the kids section too. Can anyone say high waisted shorts? Kids jeans are perfect for this, and are typically cheaper than adults. I know you wouldn't want to pay 20 bucks at Charlotte Ruse on a pair of jeans, just to destroy them. Or even drop $25 on shorts you can make yourself.
  6. Try on everything. No matter how gross it sounds, it would suck to buy something that doesn't fit you correctly or that doesn't flatter your figure. They actually wash the clothes before they put them out. But I would just take precaution and take a super bath afterwards.
  7. Dress comfortably. Please do not wear a super complicated outfit to go thrifting. It will only make things more complicated, duhh.
Not sure where you local thrift store is? Google is your best friend. Or you can always check out goodwill or salvation army.

Do you have any other tips that might help make a thrifting trip easier? Let me know.

Happy thrifting.
